The battery is like a rubber band, says Dan Steingart, a materials scientist at Princeton University. When you鈥檙e charging the battery, you鈥檙e stretching the rubber band; when you鈥檙e using it, you鈥檙e releasing it. Just like a rubber band can break if you stretch it too much, putting too much energy into one side will ruin the battery.
