Ternary Material, future development trend of lithium battery

Among lithium-ion battery, battery capacity and anode material are closely related. Anode material is the main factor which influences the battery energy capacity. The characteristics of Lithium-ion batteries with different anode materials are obvious different. Common anode materials of lithium-ion battery are:
       Unitary material: lithium cobalt oxides (LiCoO2),lithium nickelate (LiNiO2),lithium manganate (LiMn2O4);
       Binary material: Nickel and cobalt acid lithium (LiNi0.7Co0.3O2);
       Ternary material: Nickel cobalt manganese acid lithium(LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2),Lithium nickel and cobalt aluminate(LiNi1-x-y CoxAlyO2),lithium iron phosphate(LiFePO4)etc. 

What is ternary material on earth? Just as its name implies, ternary material is the composite chemical combination material of three kinds of the positive electrode material. Theoretically speaking, it owns the characteristics and advantages of each electrode material. NCM and NCA are at present the most common two kinds of ternary anode materials.


NCM refers to Nickel cobalt manganese acid lithium(LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 abbreviation: NCM), is at present the most mainstream ternary material, which also be considered the development trend in the future. By deploying the portions of nickel, cobalt and manganese, it can obtain different electrode characteristic. The material model of NCM vary from 111 ternary(N:C:M=1:1:1) to 433,532,622,811.With increasing nickel content, battery energy density also has improved accordingly. Energy density of model 111 ternary battery is around 2.0KWh/L,up to model 622, the energy density can reach up to 2.3KWh/L銆侼CM battery has a good application prospect in the 3C field or transportation field (Used as a power battery), according to its different models and market demand. 

NCA refer to Lithium nickel and cobalt aluminate 锛圠iNi1-x-yCoxAlyO2  abbreviation: NCA锛, It is derived from nickel acid lithium (liNiO2) materials. This kind of battery capacity is higher, but the corresponding stability is poorer, at the moment, with some aluminum, to stabilize its structure. The common formulas is 锛圠iNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2锛. Strictly speaking, NCA may not belong to ternary material but it is improved binary material. Relatively, as for NCM, Japan鈥檚 Chemical, Heda and Sumitomo Metal Industries have monopoly in NCA market. Panasonic and Sony are the main suppliers of NCA battery. And there is a small amount of use in Taiwan. NCA battery energy density is high, at present, high-end ternary batteries are mainly composed by NCA. Tesla Motors used Panasonic 18650 battery which anode material adopted NCA Ternary material.

NCM and NCA represent two important directions of Lithium-ion positive electrode ternary materials: NCA and NCM. N is nickel element, high density volume, but hydrophilic, relatively reliable; A is aluminum element, serve as supporting materials锛嶰n the market at present, NCM and NCA are two kinds of thinking, which solving the problem of the stability of LiNi02. Either Mn or A1 exert any capacity, it plays a similar support role, and with better stability. It can be understood probably, NCA and NCM with high nickel, on the capacity aspect, NCA is relatively high, but NCM is better on security.

At present Ternary Lithium electricity pattern is 鈥渢hree pillar鈥 structure of China, Japan and Korea.
